Each ammunition belongs to a certain category of danger. When designing ammunition depots must be taken into account. In order to determine to which category a specific ammunition belongs, it is necessary to perform a sequential check of its belonging to one of the nine weapon hazard groups - E1, E2, E3, E4, E5, E6, E7, B, D. In this list, it is in the first position there is a category with the highest danger, and on the last - with a lower one.

In order to accurately determine the category of a specific weapon during design, it is necessary to use a special table in the departmental building regulations.

Each group of ammunition is characterized:

• the diameter of the debris spread during the explosion;
• degree of fire danger;
• formation of a powerful shock wave;
• large thermal radiation;
• the degree of destruction of buildings and structures;
• the distance of fire outbreaks.

The location of the ammunition depot must be approved by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. In order for the project of the general plan of the weapons storage base to meet security requirements, it is necessary to observe certain minimum distances from its perimeter to the following objects:

• 15 km to airfields;
• 15 km to civil aviation routes;
• 30 km. to nuclear power plants;
• 20 km to thermal and hydroelectric power plants;
• 20 km. to the objects of the petrochemical industry;
• 15 km to main gas and oil pipelines.

During the design of objects intended for the storage of ammunition, it is necessary to provide for sorting, blasting and helipads, economic, barracks and residential areas. A security perimeter around the warehouse is still being designed.

Any warehouse where ammunition is stored can be protected from unauthorized access by a wire fence. There should be a distance of at least 1.5 km from the field of the warehouse complex, where the projectiles are detonated, to detached residential buildings, highways, railways, and sorting sites. At the same time, the warehouse must be located at a distance of 3 km from the settlement. In addition, the helipad is located 1.2 km from the technical area and sorting area. During the design, it is also necessary to provide for a prohibited zone around the warehouse, the width of which will be at least 400 meters.

Placed buildings and structures on the sorting site and technical territory must be subject to collapse. If they belong to the danger category B and D, then they are allowed not to perform such a procedure.

The main difficulties and mistakes
with independent design:

1. Lack of an agreed project of the Sanitary Protection Zone (SZZ)
2. Lack of metering devices and objective (calculated) data on the required productivity.
3. Lack of title deeds to the land.
4. Inaccuracies in the preparation of the Terms of Reference: all the necessary studies were not taken into account, the documents listed above were not taken into account.
5. The justification of the price was performed incorrectly, on the basis of commercial proposals of non-specialized organizations, without taking into account the fulfillment of the requirements of technical conditions, the need for inspection of buildings and structures, etc.
6. Surveys, research, and design are performed by different companies, which causes delays and additional work.
